A comparison is made between the magnetic properties of VFe alloys occurring in the disordered b.c.c. phase and those occurring in the atomically more ordered σ-phase (tetragonal). It is shown that a considerable moment reduction occurs when the disordered b.c.c. alloys are transformed into the σ-phase by low-temperature annealing. It is confirmed by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy that the moment reduction is not an apparent effect associated with possible deviations from a ferromagnetic moment arrangement. For the σ-phase the 57Fe isomer shift is studied as a function of Fe-concentration and analysed in terms of the model of Miedema and van der Woude.
