Summary Our experience with 118 patients who underwent 123 consecutive liver scans has been reviewed. The accuracy of preoperative liver scanning, as well as other liver function tests, was assessed subsequently at laparotomy, at autopsy or by biopsy. Liver scanning predicted liver metastasis correctly in 72.0 per cent of cases, and alkaline phosphatase was elevated in 50.0 per cent of those patients who had metastatic liver disease.
