Histologic studies indicate that early deaths after thoracic irradiation are secondary to esophageal denudation, perforation, infection, and the associated inanition. Deaths occur between one and three weeks after irradiation with a minimum point appearing in the LD50 at twenty-eight days. For single doses the LD50/28 is 2,682 rads; this increases to 3,527 rads in 2 fractions and to 5,745 rads in 10. The relationship between number of fractions and dose and number of days and dose was determined, and a formula for calculating equivalent single doses was developed: TD = ED·No.28·T0.05.
