An analytical model of simply supported laminated composite beams embedded with magnetostrictive layers (Terfenol-D) is presented. The model is based on the higher order shear deformation theory developed by Senthilnathan et al (Senthilnathan N R, Lim S P, Lee L H and Chow S T 1988 Comput. Struct. 10 211–29) which assumes a constant in-plane rotation tensor through the thickness of the beams. The governing differential equations of the model are derived using the Hamilton principle. The velocity feedback control law is used to control vibration suppression. The effect of material properties, lamination schemes and location of the magnetostrictive layers on vibration is examined.
