Methicillin, 1,6 dimethoxyphenyl penicillin, is the first of the commercial semisynthetic penicillin analogues derived from the 6‐amino penicillanic acid nucleus1 resistant to destruction by penicillinase. These new antimicrobial substances have already proved their clinical effectiveness, but clinical experience with them is not yet extensive enough to establish how toxic they are. This is a report of bone marrow depression in two patients treated with methicillin. In both cases there was complete hematologic recovery following withdrawal of methicillin. It is noted that such reactions have not been reported after two decades of use of penicillin G.
