Holding a Pt0 anion in a pincer: Reduction of the pincer-type PtII complex 1 results in the formation of the thermally stable anionic Pt0 complex 2. This complex adopts a T-shaped structure and exhibits diverse reactivity, including efficient electron-transfer processes in which 2 is re-oxidized quantitatively to PtII. Protonation of 2 with water gives a PtII hydride complex, and CF activation under mild conditions leads to 3 (see scheme).
