A simple optical arrangement is described with which one can easily determine the position of a liquid meniscus with good accuracy (1‐2μ) by observing an diffraction fringe. This arrangement is convenient for the measurement of osmotic pressure or viscosity. Some experiments are described where it is used to measure viscositites at very low gradients (low driving pressures) in a capillary viscometer.
