Summary This paper is one of a series that have been prepared to summarise the evolution of silvicultural practices in the native forests of Australia. It describes changes in silvicultural practices in the context of ecological characteristics of the species and changing perceptions of forest values and land use. This paper focuses on the semi-arid eucalypt woodlands, and the dry and wet sclerophyll forests of Western Australia. Data are presented which illustrate the impact of these practices on the forest in terms of intensity of disturbance.
