Although antenatal and neonatal interven-tions and care practices have increased sur-vival and improved long-term outcomesfor very preterm (<32 weeks gestation) orvery low birthweight (VLBW: <1500 g)infants, the incidence of necrotisingenterocolitis (NEC) and late-onset (noso-comial) infection remains high. Late-onsetinfection affects about 20% and NECoccurs in about 5% of all of very pretermor VLBWinfants.
