Infrared spectra from Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, show absorption by volcanic and atmospheric gases. The composition of the main volcanic gaseous components within the primary fountain is estimated to be H2O, 95%; CO2, 4%; and SO2, 1%. These results are reasonable in the light of the contribution of volatiles to the budget of the elements in the earth's crust. The wavelength of scattered radiation indicates an upper size limit of about 4 μ for fume particles.
