A formal expression for the Hall resistivity is derived with help of a constructed nonequilibrium statistical operator. The main correction to the free-electron Hall coefficient comes from deviations from the perfect structure. It is shown using a single site resonance model that the resultant Hall coefficient can be negative or positive for transition metals. The theory is applicable to both solid and liquid metals.
