Mental function may be significantly impaired in people with epilepsy. Observations of status epilepticus support the notion that seizures produce mental impairment or even decline. Evidence, however, from studies of electroconvulsive therapy and prospective studies of epileptics indicate that impairment can be variable and mental decline may not be prominent. The underlying pathology leading to seizures, anticonvulsant medications, interictal epileptiform discharges, and psychosocial setting all contribute to overall impairment and perceived decline.
