Some preliminary results of a calculation of the inductive electric field produced by a time-dependent field-aligned current system are presented. The current model consists of a partial ring current joined to an ionospheric electrojet by field-aligned currents to represent a possible substorm current configuration. When a time variation for the current that is characteristic of the magnetic substorm is used, it is found that inductive electric fields of as much as 0.38 mV/m can be produced parallel to the magnetic field. It is estimated that the possible energy change of a charged particle due to such an electric field can be of the order of several keV.
