Porous membranes made from a hydrophobic polymer have a minimum entry pressure for water and for some liquids with a contact angle less than 90°. A model was developed to account for this behavior by treating the membrane as a square array of intersecting cylindrical fibers. Experimental data for air-liquid systems in polytetrafluoroethylene membranes showed good agreement with the model, but some liquid-liquid systems gave anomolously low entry pressures.
