Treatment of niobium pentachloride with dialkyl disulfides affords ionic complexes of the formula [NbCl4(S2R2)2][NbCl6] in 72−86% yields. The ionic complexes are readily hydrolyzed by traces of water to afford complexes of the formula {[NbCl4(S2R2)2]}2[NbCl5·NbOCl4·NbOCl4·NbCl5] in 22−27% yields. Evaluation of [NbCl4(S2R2)2][NbCl6] as single-source precursors for the deposition of niobium disulfide films is described.
