The methods of synthesis of bonded phases using silica gel as matrix are reviewed together with the secondary reactions of these phases for the introduction of functional groups. The effects of surface coverage, chain length, nature of the support material and temperature on separations using bonded phase packings are discussed. Consideration is given to factors relating to sample capacity, the choice of conditions for packing bonded phase materials and methods for the prediction of retention parameters. A scheme is presented for the selection of initial conditions for analysis by bonded phase chromatography.
