SAVER algorithm outperforms ds-AF-LMS in separating fetal and maternal ECGs, achieving a ~93% F1 score.
Why the study?
Does a diffusion-based channel selection algorithm accurately separate maternal and fetal ECG from a two-channel maternal abdominal signal?
Does a diffusion-based channel selection algorithm accurately separate maternal and fetal ECG from a two-channel maternal abdominal signal?
A novel diffusion-based channel selection algorithm enables the separation of maternal and fetal ECG from a two-channel abdominal signal, potentially offering an affordable monitoring solution.
May enable affordable two-channel fetal monitoring; leaves open prospective clinical validation before adoption.
There is a need for affordable, widely deployable maternal-fetal ECG monitors to improve maternal and fetal health during pregnancy and delivery. Based on the diffusion-based channel selection, here we present the mathematical formalism and clinical validation of an algorithm capable of accurate separation of maternal and fetal ECG from a two channel signal acquired over maternal abdomen.

Li et al. (2017) studied Pregnancy (Fetal ECG monitoring) (n=80). SAVER algorithm vs. Other ECG separation algorithms (e.g., ds-AF-LMS, JADE-ICA, PCA) was evaluated on F1 score for fetal R peak detection (CinC2013 database). The SAVER algorithm accurately separated fetal and maternal ECG signals from two-channel abdominal recordings, achieving a mean F1 score of 92.99% for fetal R peak detection in the CinC2013 database compared to 72.77% with ds-AF-LMS.
