Does not support allopurinol for T. cruzi clearance in chronic Chagas; this RCT confirms its lack of efficacy.
Rassi et al. (2007) conducted an RCT in Chronic phase of Chagas disease (n=35). Allopurinol vs. Placebo was evaluated on Positive xenodiagnosis after treatment. Allopurinol (900 mg/d) was ineffective at clearing Trypanosoma cruzi from peripheral blood in chronic Chagas disease, with 100% of patients in both groups remaining positive by xenodiagnosis.
