A reinterpretation is made of previously published data concerning the frequency of the instability waves in the separated shear layer from a circular cylinder for Reynolds numbers in the range 103–105. An accurate fit to the observed variation can be achieved using a piecewise fit based on theoretical and empirical arguments. A logical conclusion is that the ratio of the frequency of the instability waves to the Kármán vortex shedding frequency is indeed determined by the boundary-layer properties at separation, as suggested by Bloor.
