Motivated by recent experimental results we test how well various extensions of the well-known coherent potential approximation (CPA) determine the characteristics of the acoustic-wave propagation through a random composite consisting of glass spheres in water. In spite of the approximate character of the methods, our results seem to be in reasonable agreement with recent experimental data.
