The Algal Collection was commenced at the Institute of Applied Microbiology, University of Tokyo in 1958, under the direction of the writer, for the purpose of establishing a collection center of microalgae in Japan.At present, 136 strains of algae (including Chlorophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenineae, Cyanophyceae and Rhodophyceae) are maintained in a pure or unialgal state.Investigators carrying out the work with microalgae are invited to send their strains to the Collection or exchange them with those in our Collection.The algal strains in the Collection are available to all investigators both academic and commercial; for academic studies the cultures will be supplied free of charge.We would appreciate, however, receiving reprints of the studies done on them.Orders for the cultures should be addressed to the Research Foundation of Applied Microbiology, c/o the
