Expressions of the differential cross section for diatomic molecules perturbed by linear molecules with high moment of inertia have been derived using a simplified version of the Anderson theory of line shape. The corresponding validity conditions have been presented. The connection with a ``classical description'' of the rotational degrees of freedom of the perturber has been shown. The cases of HF–CO2, HCl–CS2, and HF–CS2 have been studied as characteristic examples.
