Tracer study reveals time-dependent shifts in radioactive sucrose translocation profiles in Pteridium aquilinum, indicating transport kinetics comparable to angiosperm species.
The distributions of radioactivity with distance have been mapped in the rachis of Pteridium aquilinum at different times after application of 14CO2 to a pinna. Profiles change in shape with time, from wave to transition and then to diffusion. The apparent diffusion constant of sucrose may be obtained from transition and diffusion profiles. Values varied from 2·2×10−3 to 3·6×10−2 cm2 sec−1. These results are compared with those for various angiosperm species.
