Aqueous solutions of cationic surfactants show the striking phenomenon of shear induced phase transitions. Two different processes can be distinguished: At very low surfactant concentrations we observe flow induced sol → gel transitions and at higher concentrations shear induced transitions occur from a clear gel state to a turbid phase. The surfactant solutions act as a rheological switch and they can be used as elements which are sensitive to shear forces.
