The photolysis of CCl3H in the presence of ethane yielded the following reaction products: CH2Cl2, and C2H5CHCl2, C2H5CCl3, (CHCl2)2, C2HCl5, C2Cl6, and C4H10. The formation of these products is explained by recombination and disporportionation reactions of the radicals produced in Reactions (1)–(3): CHCl3+hv→CHCl2+Cl, Cl+C2H6→C2H5+HCl, Cl+CHCl3→CCl3+HCl. Data regarding various ratios of rate constants for recombination and disproportionation reactions of these free radicals are given and discussed. An approximate value k2 / k3 ≃ 0.1 is derived for H atom abstractions by Cl atoms from ethane and chloroform.
