The mechanical properties of Laves phases, and of alloys containing Laves phases, are reviewed with an eye to their potential as high-temperature structural materials. Several two-phase alloys show promising combinations of high-temperature strength and low-temperature toughness, and extensive room-temperature deformability of the cubic Laves phase by mechanical twinning is demonstrated in one series of alloys.
