This is the first of the newly instituted presidential addresses of the Systematics Association and explores the future of systematics. Simpson's definition of “systematics” as “the study of differentiation” has been followed by developments in the fields of molecular biology, epigenetics, biophysics, prebiology, and exobiology. A “new taxonomy” will arise when the methods of numerical taxonomy are employed for phylogenetic research. Perhaps in the future systematics will invade the province of non-biological evolution.
