The twinning stress, the choice of the twinning plane, and the mode of propagation of twinning observed for silver single crystals are orientation-dependent. The concept that cross-slip and deformation twinning are dependent relief mechanisms and the onset of one increases the stress required for the other relief mechanism leads to a logical explanation of many observations on deformation twinning of fcc crystals.
