Network audience share for presidential speeches and news conferences has declined during the Reagan Administration even more rapidly than the networks’ overall share of audience. Contrary to the findings of a Nielsen study that found presidential speeches to attract additional viewers during the 1970s, this research shows that millions of viewers turn away temporarily from presidential broadcasts on the television networks in the 1980s.
