Rhynchosporium secalis (Oud.) Davis, the causal agent of barley leaf scald produces a toxic glucoside family of α‐1‐0‐propanediol, the rhynchosporosides. By means of studies of in vivo and in vitro binding of these phytotoxins with membrane proteins we showed the physiological reality of the linkage of the rhynchosporosides with host proteins receptors. In this disease, this association mechanism is closely related to the host reaction towards the fungus since the greater the toxins binding the more the plants are susceptible to the parasite.
