The basicity (pKa) of a series of para-substituted N-phenylpiperidines has been measured using ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. A very good correlation was obtained for substituents of known Hammett constants ([sgrave]−) and this has been used to evaluate previously unreported parameters.
