The establishment of polarity within the Drosophila embryo provides the basis for the elaboration of complex morphogenetic patterns during embryogenesis. This process is initiated during oogenesis and is completed by the blastoderm stage of embryogenesis. The establishment of polarity within the embryo appears to be largely dependent on genes that are expressed during oogenesis, whereas the interpretation of polarity seems to be dependent on genes that are activated in the zygote.
