The covalent charge density Fourier components are calculated as the difference between the Fourier components of the total and the linear screening charges. Comparison with previous estimates of the covalent charge is given. While the total magnitude of the bond charge in silicon conforms to Phillips' conjecture ( Q b = 2 0 −1 ), it would appear to be less well localized than his model suggests.
