The deformation of extended-chain lamellar single crystals of a polydiaectylene, pTS, has been studied as a function of the applied tensile strain using transmission electron microscopy. It is found that crystals strained parallel to the chain direction undergo molecular fracture. This may be contrasted with crystals deformed in directions perpendicular to the chain direction which are found to undergo intermolecular cleavage and twinning. The mechanism of twinning has been studied in detail using selected-area electron diffraction. It is thought that the twinning takes place by bending of the polymer molecules across the twin boundary and that the principal K 1 twinning plane is (212).
