A new approach is suggested to establish E H ‐ p H diagrams for M ‐ H 2 O and M ‐ S ‐ H 2 O systems. Each species is assumed to be the primary product of a reaction between metal, sulfur, or both with water. This primary product is assigned an activity term representing its stability. At any E H ‐ p H level, the species of maximum stability is identified and diagrams are developed by scanning all points ( E , p H) at specified resolution. Results of this work are compared with the literature. In some cases, published diagrams are not in agreement either between themselves or with the present study.
