SUMMARY Methods for determining cell numbers and cell size in the skin or dermal system of fruit have been examined, using as an example the grape, Vitis vinifera. Though the cells are commonly six‐sided, projected cell area is more accurately determined if the cells are assumed to be circular. Sources of error and assumptions are considered.
