The relevance of using bioassays specific to existing types of growth regulators during preliminary investigations on growth-regulation phenomena is discussed. A more general bioassay is described for use in germination and dormancy studies, based on seed-germination tests of the species under investigation. Difficulties inherent in the approach are discussed and some methods for interpreting the results suggested.
