To evaluate its true incidence and related clinical characteristics, the definition of primary adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is reemphasized. The tumor constitutes 2% of all esophageal malignancies. Its symptomatology, biologic behavior, and ultimate prognosis appear to be no different from the ordinary squamous cell carcinoma. Our analyses also support the implication of causal relationship between a columnar‐lined lower esophagus (Barrett's epithelium) and the neoplasm.
