Following nose-only inhalation, the deposition of nebulized monodisperse fluorescent polystyrene latex microspheres (MFPLM) in the lung of the rat has been studied. The deposition pattern of seven different particle sizes, in the range 0.6−5.7 μm, have been used to obtain the deposition factor for calculating both lung and body burden. We found that the optimal particle size for deposition in the rat lung is between 0.6 and 1.16 μm, with a deposition factor for lung burden of 0.093, indicating that about 10% of the inhaled dose will be deposited in the rat lung.
