An improved tensile-test m etbod for concret e bas been developed . Cylindrical specimens, 4 by 16 inches, are used, a nd loa ds are applied a t both ends through threaded r ods embedded in a ri ch m ortar. Compressive-and tensile-strength and stress-strain det ermin ations have been made for concretes ma de with various types of cements, including cements wi t h aerating agents, and with va rious aggregates. At early ages, strengths for moderat e-hea t cements were but slightl y lower than for normal cements, whereas those for high-eady-stren gth cem ents were considerably higher. T ensile strengths usually attained maximum values between 7 days and 3 months., Tensile strengths depended on compressive strengths, type of cement, type of aggregate, and on sand-gravel ratios.
