The marking of essays in most practical situations lacks reliability and several standard methods to improve reliability have been outlined in the literature. The present study considered the marking of 388 essays (on a topic chosen from 10) each marked by one of 13 markers. Statistics for these marks were obtained and a small study was carried out of the agreement among markers. While there was no doubt that the reliability of the marking could be improved, it was equally clear that the changes needed for this improvement were not feasible.
