The effect of stern wedges on the powering performance and annual fuel consumption of destroyer and frigate size ships is investigated. Historical model test powering data and wedge geometry characteristics which are useful for preliminary wedge design and evaluation of wedge effectiveness is presented. The final wedge design process, using a combination of model experiments and analytical computer predictions is described. This design process, applicable to a destroyer size ship, was used to design a stern wedge which minimized the traditional low speed powering penalty due to a wedge, decreased delivered power by 6 percent at maximum speed, and provided for a 2 percent decrease in annual fuel consumption.
