The oxidation reaction of ethylenediaminetetraacetatocobaltate(II) ([Co(edta)]2−) by peroxodisulfate ion (S2O82−) is greatly accelerated by irradiation with visible light of aqueous solutions containing tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) ion ([Ru(bpy)3]2+). The overall reaction is 2[Co(edta)]2−+S2O82− →2[Co(edta)]−+2SO42−. The [Ru(bpy)3]2+ ion acts as a photosensitizer and -catalyst for this reaction, and the mechanism consists of a chain reaction being initiated by the quenching reaction of the photoexcited ruthenium(II) complex ion ([Ru(bpy)3]2+*) by S2O82− ion. The mechanism of the reaction is presented to account for the results obtained.
