The reflectance spectra of a series of trimethincyanine dyes adsorbed to silver bromide were compared with the absorption spectra of the same dyes in ethanolic solution. The change in wavelength maximum produced by the formation of J-aggregates was related to the size of the dye molecul.es accordmg to the theory of Norland et al. The results. weI e qualitatively. m agreement with this theory and do not support the view that the packing of the adsorbed dye molecules is influenced by specific interactions between the dyes and silver ions on the surface.
