One in four pregnancy-capable people in the United States (US) will have an abortion. Despite abortion being common, professionals in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) related fields receive inadequate abortion education. Using data from an online survey of students enrolled in higher education programs in the Southern US, this study finds that students interested in SRH careers lack comprehensive abortion knowledge and report a large unmet need for abortion education. Overall, 42% received no abortion training, and 61% wanted more abortion courses offered. Leaders in higher education should include abortion curricula to better prepare future SRH professionals and improve patient outcomes.
