The nature of the ligands determines the luminescence properties of the central metal ion. This is illustrated on the following examples: (i) nonradiative transitions in the strong coupling model; (ii) nonradiative transitions in the weak coupling model; (iii) energy transfer from ligand to central ion. Several applications are dealt with. The cryptand ligands appear to play a special role.
