A speed group D and a speed group E dental film and two screen-film combinations were compared with respect to their diagnostic qualities. A bead phantom simulating small radiopacities and a phantom containing teeth with artificial initial caries were used. The diagnostic quality of the four imaging systems was assessed using signal detection analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for both phantoms gave approximately similar results. The resolution of the speed group D film was superior to the other imaging systems. There are significant differences for caries detection between all the imaging systems investigated except the two screen-film combinations.
