Polystyrene—8% divinylbenzene beads have been sulfonated to produce strong acid cation exchange resins with exchange capacities of 123, 171, and 642 µeq/g. These resins have capacities at least 10 times greater than commercially available surface active supports, and, therefore, are more useful for large amounts of sample. The capacities are in the range of 2–12% of the potential capacity and sulfonation is probably contained within the outer 5% of the particle radius. Experimental results have verified previous theoretical conclusions that a short column containing a resin which is ion exchange active between 5–15% of its radius will give better solute resolution than a lower capacity resin in a large column where the columns contain equal total capacities.
