The blood-gas partition coefficients, which are numerically equal to the Ostwald solubility coefficients, of benzene, toluene and m-xylene were determined by equilibrating a known volume of the solvents with blood in the closed bottle and analyzing the solvent vapor concentration in the overlying gas phase with a gas chromatograph. The partition coefficient, λ, was caluculated as follows : λ=h1V-h2 (V-A) /h2AWhere : h1=peak height obtained from a volume G of air in a bottle of capacity V in which a quantity Q of the solvent was evaporatedh2= peak height obtained from G of gas phase in the bottle in which Q of the solvent was equilibrated with a volume A of bloodUnder the conditions of V=150ml, A=10ml, G=1ml and Q=1μl, the partition coefficients of benzene, toluene and m-xylene for human blood were found to be 7.72, 14.66 and 29.03 respectively.
