Professor Sir Graeme Catto qualified from the University of Aberdeen in 1969. He won a Harkness Fellowship to Harvard University to work in renal medicine. He became dean and vice principal at Aberdeen and then at King9s College London, and pro vice chancellor at the University of London. In the 1990s he was the chief scientist at the Scottish Executive Health Department and chairman of the GMC Education Committee. He has been president of the GMC since 2002, and is also professor of medicine at the University of Aberdeen
